The catch up continues. Today's route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/20808502
Today is a short day. This is dictated by motel spacing. Menard has three motels. The next motel is in Eden, 23 miles away, and it is the only motel in that town. The next motel is in San Angelo, another 43 miles away. Shall we do 66 miles or a two day ride to get to San Angelo? You guessed it! We went for the easy days. We are retired, after all.
Leaving Menard.
We stopped at a liquor store a little over a mile out of town. (Yes we did not get on the road at the crack of dawn.) They had a nice cat tree and calico cat there.
Was kind of misty and foggy, especially early in the day.
Nice tree.
We are still in Texas Hill Country.
Good to know.
The first part of the ride today was mostly up hill, but at 12.8 miles into the day, this all changed. The road became a divided highway, we crossed a county border and the pavement improved, and we began a lovely descent. The road was smooth and clear, so we decided not to coast, but rather to up gear and go for speed. We managed to average 25 mph for the next eight miles. What a great and memorable ride! Small up hills were conquered easily. "Oh, we fell off to 17 mph on that hill." Sometimes life can be very good.
We eventually slowed to enter Eden.
We stayed at the only motel in town, the Slumber Inn. This is a motel in transition. Apparently, the previous owners had just retaken possession of the property in the last day or two. They worked hard to get me internet access so that I could correspond with my office, but the connection was too slow to allow us to blog. Nice place if they keep it up.
Tomorrow (5/11/17) we ride to San Angelo. I am looking forward to having a cell phone that works.
