Day 39, 9/1. Tilton to Concord, NH

Some realizations have slowly dawned on us: 1) We are in a tourist area. 2) Labor Day weekend is coming right up. 3) We have no place to stay for the holiday weekend. Yikes!

A quick internet/phone survey of the surrounding area found us a room at the Days Inn in Concord for the weekend. With our destination decided, our next task was to determine how to get there. With a short ride in prospect, a packed stone rail trail looked like it would be a fun option. As it turned out, there were two rail trails available, the Winnipesaukee River Trail from Tilton to Franklin, and the Northern Rail Trail from Franklin to just north of Concord. The Northern Rail Trail follows the Merrimack River which begins in Franklin where the Winnipesaukee and Pemigewasset rivers converge.

At the beginning of the river trail is a private collection of old cabooses (caboosi?) They are used by a local tourist railroad which operates sporadically.

Yep, a rail trail.

Wild river.

In Franklin there was a monument to the history of the paper mills in the area.

We had a great ride. The occasional narrow gates were challenging, but the surface was firm, and the scenery was outstanding.

Since Vermont we have seen signs warning of "Moose Crossing," but have seen no moose. Could this be some moose scat? Big pile. Not spread out like road apples.

Once off the rail trails, New Hampshire reminded us we were still in the Appalachians.

We will be in Concord for five nights. More blogging later on our extended time off.

Moose poop looks like a pile of chocolate covered almonds. Bear poop is globularish. FYI

Damn. It was probably bear poo. I really wanted to see a moose. Of course a bear would be cool, if it was well fed and behind a fence and....
