Four day weekend

Memorial Day weekend is almost here. Margaret will be home by 4 PM on Friday. Our plan this weekend is to simulate the ride. Since we will average 83 miles a day on the Big Ride, I hope to average 83 miles a day for the Friday through Monday of Memorial Day.
More later.

The Other Half

I thought I might say hello. I am the other half of this tandem team, the one who sits up front. My position is usually called the captain or the pilot. I have two basic jobs on the bike. My first job is to steer and brake and change gears and balance the bike. My second job is to make the person in back happy.

The person in back, often called the stoker or co-pilot (Margaret has her own name for her position), also has two jobs. The first job is to pedal, sometimes very hard. Margaret is the one who starts the bike from a dead stop; once we are moving, I start to pedal too, but she gets us going. The second job is NOT to balance the bike. If both of us balance the bike, nobody balances the bike. In a tight situation, a narrow path with tight turns for example, she might even close her eyes to avoid reacting to our situation. (I should say here that this level of trust makes me feel humble and very responsable.)

Margaret is also our navigator as she has two hands free to deal with maps.

To this date we have about 3,000 mile together on our recumbent tandem. I'll talk about what it is like to ride a tandem in a future post.

Introducing... Mrs. Peters!!

Training is going well, and Mrs. Peters is continuing to meet with me (Karlee) and Katie. I'm going to take a few minutes to describe Mrs. Peters. Mrs. Peters is very athletic, (as you can tell, because she's doing the Riding Across America), and she's a great Language Arts teacher. She's very logical, and very kind. All of her kids enjoy having her as a Language Arts teacher and Katie and I are going to miss her SOOO much when we go to High School next year!

How We're Doing Money-Wise

NJHS (National Junior Honor Society) hosted a dance for Sparta Middle School students on Thursday, January 20th. All the proceeds went to the American Lung Association. Sparta Middle School's NJHS raised $500! We have a total of $1,100!! That is about 15% of the goal! We're well on our way. Thanks Sparta Middle School!

Who and Why

Margaret Peters and her husband, John Lemke, are preparing to ride across America on bikes. They will travel 3,300 miles in 7 weeks. They are doing this because John's father died when he was in his 50's from lung cancer. Margaret has asthma, and one of her favorite students has asthma. The rate of asthma among children is rising astronomically, and we need to find out why. Margaret wants to be a good example for her students, by being physically fit.
